Woodlane Village

I took the University of Pretoria Journalism honours students to Woodlane Village in the East of Pretoria as part of a lecture on Visual Storytelling.

Tswelopele Step by Step Poverty Alleviation and Community Development which work in this area accompanied us.

Some of the photos I took of the students working:

Some tips on photo stories:

  • Write down title/development + ideas
  • Try to translate this into pictures
  • Each picture needs to show different aspects
  • Think that reader knows nothing about your story
  • Everything has to be readable in your photo
  • Photos have to contain 5 W
  • Try to create visual flow
  • Make sure you have beginning, middle and end
  • Attach text to pictures to complete what is missing in photo
  • The better the picture the less words it needs
  • Be aware of ethical boundaries
  • Treat people with respect

Read stories in Beeld about Woodlane village:

Tjoef-tjaf is die hare af . . . met sonkrag  (Look at more photos of the Solar barbers)

Hy spaar lank vir fiets, toe brand dit

Nou mag hy sy nuwe fiets ry
